Editor Settings
Before writing your book you should look into the editor settings. There you can modify a lot of things like your general font of the book, some additional adjustments like text contrast, autosave options and a lot more.
You can find the editor settings in the top right next to the profile icon
After clicking on the entry you will see the editor settings modal.
General editor settings
In the Main Settings section, you can personalize your writing environment and the appearance of your book during the writing process. Here is a detailed explanation of the available options:
Global Font
The Global Font setting allows you to choose the default font for your entire book. This font will be used throughout your manuscript, ensuring a consistent and professional look for all your chapters and scenes.
Editor Font Size
The Editor Font Size setting is designed for your convenience as an author. It lets you adjust the size of the text within the editor window while you are writing. Increasing or decreasing the font size can help reduce eye strain and make your writing sessions more comfortable. Note: Changing the editor font size only affects how text appears while you write and does not influence the font size in your exported book.
Text Contrast
The Text Contrast option is especially useful if you are using Dark Mode. Lowering the contrast can make the text easier on your eyes during long writing sessions, reducing fatigue and enhancing your overall writing experience.
Text Preview Box
You can see the effects of your chosen settings in the Text Preview box. This area displays how the global book font, editor font size, and text contrast will look. You can also type your own content into the preview box to test your settings with different types of text, ensuring your selections are perfect for your writing style.
By customizing these settings, you can create a comfortable and visually pleasing writing environment that suits your personal preferences.
Typography
Within the Typography settings, you can fine-tune advanced editor behaviors to match your personal writing style. One of the key features currently available is the ability to customize quotation marks. This allows you to define exactly which characters are inserted when you press the “ or ' keys on your keyboard.
If you need the original character without the automatic conversion, you can type the character followed by a backspace. This will undo the auto-conversion, and you'll get the character you originally typed.
You have the flexibility to choose from a variety of preset quotation mark styles, or you can create your own by selecting the “Custom” option. This ensures that your manuscript always uses the quotation marks that best fit your language, region, or personal preference.
The following quotation mark presets are available:
- German quotation marks – Uses „double low-9“ and “double high-reversed-9” for double quotes, and ‚single low-9‘ and ‘single high-reversed-9’ for single quotes, which are standard in German texts.
- Angle quotes inward – Uses » and « for double quotes, and › and ‹ for single quotes, with the angle brackets pointing inward. This style is commonly used in French and some other European languages.
- Angle quotes outward – Uses « and » for double quotes, and ‹ and › for single quotes, with the angle brackets pointing outward. This variation is used in certain languages and typographic traditions.
- English quotation marks (curly) – Uses “curly” or “smart” quotes (“ ” for double, ‘ ’ for single), which are standard in English-language publishing.
- English quotation marks (straight) – Uses straight quotes (” for double, ' for single), which are often used in programming or when typographic quotes are not desired.
If none of the presets fit your needs, simply select “Custom” to define your own opening and closing quotation characters for both single and double quotes.
The automatic closing quote conversion only works if there are no spaces before the last quote. If you want to have a space in between, you can use a custom quote with a space + your closing quote.
Customize quotation marks
You can fully customize how quotation marks appear in your text by using the individual quotation settings.
To do this, simply check the option “Use individual settings”. This will unlock fields where you can specify your own characters or character sequences for the following:
- Beginning of a sentence with double quotes – Define how double quotation marks should appear at the start of a quoted sentence.
- Beginning of a sentence with single quotes – Specify the character(s) for single quotation marks at the start of a quoted sentence.
- End of a sentence – Set the character(s) used to close either double or single quoted sentences.
You are not limited to just one character for each field. You can enter multiple characters or even special symbols, allowing you to match your preferred style or the conventions of your target language.
Once configured, these custom quotation marks will be automatically inserted whenever you press the double quote (“) or single quote (') keys on your keyboard while writing. You can check your quotes in the preview text.
Toolbar modules
With the editor toolbar modules, you have complete control over the functions available in your writing environment. This allows you to tailor the toolbar to your specific needs, making your workspace cleaner and more efficient-especially when working on devices with limited screen space, such as mobile phones.
You can easily enable or disable individual modules in the toolbar. If there are formatting tools or features you do not require for your current project, simply disable them to declutter your interface. Conversely, you can enable additional modules if you need more advanced formatting options for your book.
These toolbar settings are synchronized across all your devices. This means that any customization you apply-such as hiding or showing certain modules-will automatically be reflected whether you are writing on your desktop, tablet, or phone.
Importantly, disabling a module from the toolbar does not affect the content or formatting of your existing text. If you have used a formatting feature in your book and later remove its module from the toolbar, the text will remain unchanged and will continue to display as before. The only difference is that the formatting option will no longer be accessible from the toolbar until you re-enable it.
Summary of Toolbar Module Functions:
- Enable/Disable Modules: Show or hide formatting tools based on your needs.
- Optimize for Mobile: Reduce toolbar clutter for easier use on small screens.
- Cross-Device Sync: Toolbar customizations are automatically applied on all your devices.
- Non-Destructive: Disabling modules does not alter your existing text or formatting; it only hides the option from the toolbar.
By customizing your editor toolbar, you can create a focused and distraction-free writing environment, perfectly suited to your workflow and device.
